The following morning, Caleb stared out the window of the small receiving room near the front door of Winifred’s home as he waited to be shown into Lord Sutton’s study. No purpose would be served in pacing the small area. Yet that was what he wanted to do. He felt trapped like a penned lion at the zoological gardens, unable to escape.

His heart thudded heavily at what lay ahead. This wasn’t how he’d imagined his return to England. He had meant to keep his distance from Winifred—not marry her, especially when he was still so uncertain of her feelings toward him.

He had left the ball immediately after the confrontation, all too aware of the stares and whispers following his exit. Gossip would spread quickly. He’d dismissed his carriage and walked home in an effort to work through his frustration, but it hadn’t helped.

Sleep had been elusive, the image of Winifred jerking back as if horrified by his proposal—the second one—playing over and over in his mind. She’d acted like she couldn’t bear his touch. Or was it that she found the idea of spending the rest of their lives together so appalling?

Yet she had kissed him readily enough and seemed to enjoy doing so. Had she only been dabbling in an experiment of sorts regarding the physical aspects of a relationship? After all, he was a friend, someone she could trust not to take a kiss too far. Was it the thought of committing to a future with him that she couldn’t stand?

He had no idea how she felt or what she was thinking. Then again, his own thoughts were spinning. He only knew there was no other course but forward.

Winifred had appeared shocked when he’d told her of Thornton’s plan. Clearly, she hadn’t known about it. Had her aunt and uncle hoped to have Thornton arrive in that room rather than him?

He shook his head. He was the one to blame. If he hadn’t sought her out and walked into that room where she’d been alone, placing them both at risk, they wouldn’t be in this position. Denying any wrongdoing to the Roydons wouldn’t have helped. This was a matter of honor. Whether Winifred could forgive him for the part he’d played remained to be seen.

“If you will follow me, my lord, the earl will see you.” The somber butler led the way down the corridor.

The idea of seeing Sutton for the first time since his return under these circumstances worsened his upset. He could imagine what his father would have thought of the situation if he were still alive—disappointed with him, yet again.

He drew a slow breath in an attempt to shake off his dour thoughts. He cared for Winifred and always had. Marrying her wouldn’t be so terrible—except for the part where she could crush him with yet another rejection.

Based on her heated refusal of his proposal, she didn’t love him, nor did she want to marry him. That hurt more than he could say. Was she
